DUO KORANYI-KOZHUKHIN, violoncelle-piano

Duo Koranyi-Kozhukhin
Jakob Koranyi, violoncelle
Denis Kozhukhin, piano

"An Unforgettable Concert
"

A concert where not a minute felt unneeded. Two runaway hours, but they feel like two unusually well spent hours of one’s life. This is the sum of the concert with Jakob Koranyi, cello, and Denis Koshukhin, piano. The two young soloists, who soon will enter upon larger scenes than the presbytery of Iggesund’s church, lift a arduous and rather unconventional program to a singular musical experience.

Debussy, Britten, Ligeti and Brahms, not exactly the usual audience pleasers. But the listener, who expects coolness and experimental tests have come to the wrong concert. Here passion and affection counts in every bar, from the modernist Ligeti to the romantic Brahms. The opening sonatas for cello and piano (Debussy and Britten) are given the same devoted interpretation. You immediately notices the conciseness and the drive from both of the soloists. A precise force where nothing of Britten’s intellectual eloquence or Debussy’s emotionality is lost. Debussy hovers between stoical temperance and Latin heat and you are spirited away by the maturity in expression and authority of the interpretation by both of theese young men. Yes, they  do not neglect anything, all of Britten’s dynamic millimeter size changes, a piece, which is a micro cosmos of musical richness. Full of fantastic details, lyric (a fantastic elegy), dramatic in the dialog between cello and piano and with a frenzy in the final, which feels absolutely un-Brittish. Short, and most intensive are two solo pieces by György Ligeti, a small cello sonata full of musical memories and blinkings and a piano etude, in diabolic tempo, “L’escalier du diable”, Paganini may be excused, here he is outplayed by Koshukhin with the high and rapid sound of the Bolin grand piano. Two brilliant presentations, maybe Koranyi is the one who is capable of broader emotional experession. A total absence of triviality characterizes Jakob Koranyi’s and Denis Koshukhin’s performances. They play as if every bar would be the last one, with an enthusiasm which takes the audience’s and reviewer’s breaths away. But this is the feeling of real art. A daring, intense and steeply expressive programme, beautifully finished with a Brahms sonata. Which is as wise as it is necessary. A highly romantic finale, passionately bright and with Brahms’ special warmth. The latter is charmed out by Kozhukhin’s  radiant piano musicality, here you hear the very best of the romantic music, its credo. Musical delight, first rate technique and total insight, indeed the ovations did not wish to come to an end this Tuesday evening. An unforgettable concert.
